- Bottom Line
Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 Premium is high-end, and expensive, dictation software. You can use it to compose orally, navigate the Web with just your voice, and more. It's not an impulse buy, but if you are committed to learning the art of dictation, it's fast, efficient, and thorough in what it can do.
Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 Premium ($199.99) is a Windows-only dictation product designed to increase productivity, alleviate the stress of typing, and ease any other number of problems associated with controlling a computer by hand. The latest version of the product brings improved accuracy and speed to an already-excellent piece of software. It also adds a few new features, such as support for major webmail programs (Gmail, Yahoo Mail, etc.). With Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 Premium, you can dictate documents and emails, navigate your computer, and control some other basic computer functions, such as web browsing, all by using your voice.
Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 learns to detect what you say fairly quickly, and it's quite accurate even the first time you use it. Better still, it improves over time because it learns your language patterns and which words you commonly use. You can further improve its accuracy by giving the program access to your sent emails and documents that you've written, stored both locally and on Google Drive. Dragon will scan those documents and learn even more about your language usage so it can better guess what you're saying when you dictate.
The major drawbacks of Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 are that 1) it does take time and dedication to learn to use, and 2) it's rather expensive, considering you get some dictation features built into the Windows operating system.
Price and Requirements
Dragon NaturallySpeaking is for Windows computers only. One big change with Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 is that it now supports Windows 8 and 8.1 in both 32- and 64-bit versions. The Mac version of the product is a little different, and it even has a different name: Dragon Dictate for Mac.
Dragon NaturallySpeaking comes in two versions: Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 Home (starting at $99.99) and Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 Premium (starting at $199.99), which is the version reviewed here.
The Premium product supports Excel and PowerPoint, but the Home version does not. Premium users also get advanced correction and editing tools, such as the ability to play back speech in documents, as well as the ability to import custom word lists and user profiles. You'll also want Premium if you use a variety of recording devices, or if you intend to transcribe text that you've recorded by speaking it back to Dragon (neither version includes an automated transcription service).
The system requirements are important to consider. During installation, if the software notices your machine doesn't meet the minimum requirements, it won't install the product.
You'll need 2GB RAM for 32-bit Windows (7, 8, 8.1) or 4GB for 64-bit Windows (7, 8, and 8.1, as well as Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012). The CPU requirements are a minimum 2.2GHz Intel dual-core or equivalent AMD processor. You'll also need 4GB of free hard disk space and a sound card supporting 16-bit recording. And you need to make sure you have a Nuance-approved microphone.
For online activation and help files, you'll need the current version of Chrome or Firefox, or Internet Explorer 9 or higher. If you buy Dragon on disc, you'll of course need a DVD-ROM drive for installation.
The list of programs that work with Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 Premium includes: Microsoft Office 2010 and 2013 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.), Web mail (Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Outlook.com), NotePad, WordPad, DragonPad (word processor included in Dragon), OpenOffice Writer 4.1, WordPerfect X6 and X7. PowerPoint does not have Full Text Control. It also works with Internet Explorer (version 9 and later) and the latest versions of Chrome and Firefox.
Updates and New Features
A new DragonBar, the primary interface that you see when using Dragon (more on this later), can be used in both desktop and Modern mode with Windows 8.
Version 13 now includes Full Text Control in supported text fields in Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and Outlook.com (when running in Internet Explorer 9 or later, or the latest versions of Chrome or Firefox). This means you can dictate, edit, and format emails using Dragon directly in the browser. If you come across a website or program that isn't supported, you can always compose using the included Dragon Dictate Box and paste the content into the appropriate area later.
Dragon 13 Premium Vs Home Edition
I tested the Web support on both Internet Explorer and Chrome. When I launched IE with Dragon running, it offered to install the appropriate plug-in. It worked witout a hitch, and I quickly found that I could compose emails and send emails just as I learned to do in the included tutorial. Easy as pie. Chrome took some patience, however, because some commands simply don't work (documentation in Dragon lets you know that they aren't supported): go to Address bar, go home, and refresh page among them. Instead, you have to use work-around commands, like 'tab three times' and 'press enter' to get to some buttons that you want, or 'press F5' to refresh.
Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 has been updated to adapt faster to your formatting preferences, which might sound like a minor change, but it's wildly convenient for the program to learn in one shot that you want to spell out 'percent' every time you say it.
